Bernard N. "Red" Carroll, Jr.

August 19, 1929 — October 15, 2021

CARROLL Jr, Bernard N. “Red”, age 92, of Washington Twp, passed away on Friday, October 15, 2021. Red was born to the late Bernard N. Carroll Sr. and Elizabeth (Kennedy) on August 19, 1929 in Springfield, MA. He was a member of Incarnation Parish.

Red received his Bachelor’s degree from Fordham University, where he also had a chance to watch one of his heroes coach the Fordham Rams football team, Vince Lombardi. Red served proudly in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War as a Second Lieutenant. Red credits many of his learnings about leadership from his career in the Air Force and the methods of hall of fame coach Vince Lombardi.

Red held various sales and management positions in the corrugated box industry. His career included assignments with The Mead Corporation, Georgia Pacific, International Paper, and the company he founded, Viking Container. He spoke fondly of his time working on innovative new packaging techniques, including the development of the first in-line case of aluminum cans of beer while calling on Miller Brewing company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Later he reinvented himself working for the Burke family as a manufacturing, productivity and sales consultant in food manufacturing and supply at the Burke Corporation. He loved his assignments there because he got to utilize all of the skills he developed in business over the broad expanse of his career.

Red loved football, especially Lombardi’s Green Bay Packers, the New England Patriots and more currently, the Tom Brady-helmed Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In his later years, his favorite things to do were visit with family and friends, to go down to the pool of his condo or sit on his porch smoking cigars talking about the latest developments in business and politics. Family & friends will remember him for his irreverent annual Christmas letter known as the Family Chronicle that featured his gift for sarcasm and his unique take on the politics of the day. If he had a chance to write this obituary himself, those skills would be on full display.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Janet T. Carroll.

Red is survived by his children, Michael (Virginia) Carroll, Jean (Jim) Marten, John (Diane) Carroll; and grandchildren, Thomas, Greg, Lissa, Carly, Liam. A private family Celebration of Life Memorial Mass will be held in November. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Dayton’s Veterans Association Medical Center (www.dayton.va.gov) or Ohio’s Hospice (www.OhioHospice.org).
