YOUNG, Carolyn Kearns, age 89, of Kettering, passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2014. Carolyn was born on May 24, 1924 in Dayton to the late Joseph and Mary Kearns. She was a social worker and community volunteer with degrees from Denison University, University of Dayton, and studies at Trinity College in Oxford, England. Carolyn was a former board member of the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, the YWCA, Downtown Dayton Holiday Festival, Dayton Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association, Denison University Kappa Kappa Gamma Board, and the University of Dayton Learning in Retirement Board of Governors. She was also a member of Aullwood Audubon Center of Friends, Montgomery County Historical Society, Downtown Dayton Partnership, Learning Tree Working Farm Center, Dayton Art Institute, Pendal Hill Quaker Study Center, Dayton Chapter International Friendship Force, Carillon Historical Park, Inventing Flight 2003, and a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church. Carolyn was voted one of Dayton's Top Ten Women, Outstanding Volunteer at Humane Society of Greater Dayton, Denison University Alumnae Award, Dayton Holiday Festival 25 year volunteer award, 4000 hour Kettering Hospital volunteer award, and YWCA Lifetime Achievement Award. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Floyd Young. Carolyn is survived by her daughters, Patricia Young Moore ( Michael), Kathryn Leonard, (Edward) and son, John (Celeste) Young; and grandchildren, Kathryn Kearns Moore and Bert Tyler Young. A funeral service will be held at 11:30AM on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at First Lutheran Church, 138 W. First St., Dayton, OH 45402. Family will greet friends one hour before the service (10:30 11:30) at the church. A private burial will be held at Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carolyn's memory to the Carolyn Kearns Young Educational Scholarship for YWCA Domestic Violence Clients, 411 West Third Street, Dayton, OH 45402 or to First Lutheran Church. The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the staff at Woodview Hall, Bethany Lutheran Village.
