Clarence David Shultheis

SHULTHEIS, Clarence "Red" David, age 90 of Kettering, passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2011. A native Daytonian, Clarence was a graduate of Oakwood High School and The Ohio State University with a degree in Welding Engineering. He was employed at Cramp Shipyard in Philadelphia, PA from 1943-1945, and was responsible for the quality of welds on submarines. Following the War, he was employed at Frigidaire Division of General Motors Corp, and was responsible for the automated assembly machines for washers, dryers, dishwashers, and automotive air conditioners, retiring after 35 years. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and served as Trustee, member of Council of Ministries, and president and member of the Administrative Board. He was a member of various church choirs for 52 years. Clarence was a member of Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honorary), Kettering Kiwanis, and Community Care Food Pantry. He was a charter member, president, and 30 year treasurer of The Dayton Section of the American Welding Society. He enjoyed golfing and bowling. Clarence was an avid Buckeye fan, holding life-long season football tickets. He was a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and the American Watchmakers Institute. Clarence built, repaired, and restored antique clocks. One of his fond pleasures was creating unique gifts from wood, metal, and stained glass for family members. His greatest love was his wife of 67 years, Mary Lou, his children and grandchildren. Clarence is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Louise Griest Shultheis; daughters, Carol Sue Shultheis and Kathleen Gay (Mark Robert) Roggenkamp; son, David Carl (Sandra Louise Grice) Shultheis; grandchildren, Timothy David Shultheis, Kristina Kathleen Roggenkamp, Marcia Kay Roggenkamp (Edward Marvin) Baynham, and Kaleb Mark Roggenkamp; sisters, Dorothy Stahl, Katherine Brown, and Erma Murray. He was preceded in death by parents, Carl Frederick and Margaret Eva Meier Shultheis; and brothers, Wilbur and Carl. Family will greet friends from 1:00-3:00pm on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Christ United Methodist Church, 3440 Shroyer Road, Kettering, OH 45429. A Memorial Service will be held following the visitation at 3:00pm at the church.
