Edith F. Large

October 8, 1936 — October 23, 2021

LARGE, Edith F., 85, of Kettering, OH, passed away and went to be with our Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 23, 2021. Edith was born on October 8, 1936 in Davy, W.V., the second of seven children born to the late James and Maude Cook. Edith was a very determined red head from the beginning. She loudly protested that her older sister Nina was leaving her behind to begin school. After a couple of days of this, her mother gave in and she got to go with Nina. So she started first grade at the age of four! Edith rode the bus from Davy to Welch to attend high school. And so did a young man from Little Davy with black hair and brown eyes named Johnny Large. He would say, “Scoot over Red!” and while she was highly embarrassed….she scooted over. They started dating before he entered the Marine Corps and at one time spent 16 months apart while John was in Korea. Edith sent letters every couple of days, except for the time she only had two pennies and a stamp was three cents. Edith and John were united in marriage December 17, 1955, spending 65 wonderful years with the love of her life.

The couple moved to Dayton, OH, where she worked for IBM for over 20 years. They purchased their first home in Bellbrook and lived there for over 30 years, which is where they joyfully welcomed their son, Todd. They later moved to Kettering and lived there for the remainder of her life. Edith was very devoted to her faith and was a member of Bethany Church of Christ, where she and John enjoyed serving the Lord in many ways. From preparing communion, to helping organize carry-in meals, along with countless hours rocking babies in the church nursery, which she especially enjoyed. Edith really missed the fellowship with her church friends over the past few years due to her health. She loved listening to music and singing everything from hymns to country songs. She loved to watch birds and was a mother to many fur babies through the years. Edith was a wonderful cook; her homemade vegetable soup was legendary. She always loved to read, whether it was Bible, a romance novel or Handbook of Drug Interactions. Her siblings often joked that she was Doc from the Seven Dwarves. Edith was a wonderful & caring mother and grandmother. She was always happy and had an unforgettable smile. Edith will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Edith is survived by her husband, John M. Large; son, Todd (Kimberly) Large; grandchildren, Aaron, Alyssa and Annelise; great grandchildren, Harper and Noah; Siblings Nina Bell, Ruth Ann (Carl Wayne) Urps, Donald (Jan) Cook, Doris (Larry) Burks, Kathy (Bill) Patrick as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents and her brother Earl Cook.
