Eleanor Gray Sensel

Eleanor Sensel, age 93, of Kettering and Centerville, Ohio, passed away on September 14, 2015. Eleanor was the youngest child of Adelaide (Clark) and Charles Gray and beloved wife of the late Elmer Sensel. Loving mother and role model to four daughters and their husbands, Carol and Andy Stefanopoulos, Beth and Mike Murphy, Lois and Tom Erven, and Martha Sensel and Joel Schwartz. Preceded in death by husband, Elmer, daughter, Beth, brother, Clarke, and sister, Adelaide. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Kelly Martin (Stephanie), Michael Martin (Libby), Sara Murphy Williams (Toby), Matt Murphy (Laura), Jon Murphy (Robin), Kyle Erven, Emily Erven, Rachel Schwartz, and David Schwartz and six great-grandchildren, Ellie and Cade Martin, Rebecca and Jordan Martin, and Kathryn and Abigail Murphy. Eleanor served her community and church throughout her life and inspired others to do the same. In Girl Scouting, she served as a Troop Leader and Camp Greene Site Director for many years and was on the Buckeye Trails Council as a Board Member and Vice-President. She was Chair of the Special Needs Girl Scout Membership and directed a week-long summer camp for scouts with special needs for five years, and also led a scout troop for girls with special needs. In addition to scouting, she supported her daughters' schools by volunteering as a room mother and serving on numerous fundraising campaigns for more than twenty-five years in the Kettering Schools. While residing at St. Leonard's, she welcomed new residents, served on the Resident's Council, and was an avid and competitive card and game player in the evenings. In 2011, she earned the title of Spelling Bee Co-Champion. A member of St. George's Episcopal Church since 1963, her faith community benefited from her enthusiasm to serve others through her involvement and leadership with Vestry, Christian Education, Episcopal Church Women, Annual Rummage Sale, Refugee Resettlement, St. Vincent de Paul dinners, and a long list of Social Issues Committee programs. A memorial service will take place on October 10 at 2 pm at St. George's Episcopal Church, 5520 Far Hills Avenue, Centerville. If desired, remembrances may be sent to St. George's Episcopal Church, St. Leonard's Benevolent Fund, or the Girl Scouts of Western Ohio.
