Elmer Floyd Sensel

SENSEL, Elmer Floyd, age 89, entered the nearer presence of God on April 11, 2011. Born June 12, 1921, Newport, Kentucky, the oldest of five children born to Evelyn (Roettger) and Elmer Sensel. Following Pearl Harbor, Elmer enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific On Green Island, Espirito Santo, Bougainville, and Pelilu. With the GI Bill, he attended the University of Cincinnati, earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1950. Elmer became an industrial salesman with Standard Oil of Ohio until his retirement in 1985. Beloved husband of Eleanor (Gray) for 65 years. Loving father to four daughters and their husbands, Carol and Andy Stefanopoulos, Beth and Mike Murphy, Lois and Tom Erven, and Martha and Joel Schwartz. Preceded in death by daughter, Beth Murphy. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Kelly Martin (Stephanie), Michael Martin, Sara Murphy, Matt Murphy (Laura), Jon Murphy, Kyle Erven, Emily Erven, Rachel Schwartz, and David Schwartz and his five great grandchildren, Ellie and Cade Martin, Rebecca and Jordan Martin, and Kathryn Murphy. He is also survived by his siblings, Ralph Sensel, Violet McNutt, Sara Bill, and Charles Sensel. Elmer was a devoted family man and avid golfer. Following retirement, he and Eleanor enjoyed travel throughout the United States, Europe, and Israel. He was a long time member and volunteer at St. George's Episcopal Church. He volunteered for many years with Hospice of Dayton, St. Vincent DePaul, the Salvation Army, and Meals on Wheels. He was proud to be a Marine Corps League Life Member, a member of the American Legion Post 598, and a member of St. Leonard's Veteran Group. A Mason, Elmer was a Charter Member of the F & AM, Beaver Valley #753, Beavercreek, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Dayton, and the Grand Lodge of F&AM, Worthington. He was a past president of the Exchange Club. A memorial service will take place on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 4:00PM at George's Episcopal Church 5520 Far Hills Avenue, Centerville. The family would like to express appreciation to the caregivers with Hospice of Dayton and St. Leonard's Health Care Center for their kindness in caring for Elmer. If desired, remembrances may be sent to Hospice of Dayton, St. George's Building and Grounds, or the St. Leonard's Benevolent Fund. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.routsong.com.
