Esther Louisa Vontz

April 7, 1921 — March 26, 2010

VONTZ, Esther Louisa (Lueders), age 88 passed away Friday, March 26, 2010. She was a 1939 graduate from Western Hills High School in Cincinnati. Essie received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Cincinnati in 1943. She was elected to the Mortar Board Society of American and, throughout her life, she kept up friendships made in that organization and the Kappa Delta sorority. Essie married Albert Willi Vontz in 1945 and spent the next fifty years volunteering her time and talents and touching lives in P.T.A. offices, Oakwood YMCA, Buckeye Trails Girl Scout Council, Dayton Woman’s Club and Dayton College Women’s Club. Essie was an avid gardener and an expert knitter. She and her husband loved boating, traveled extensively and lived happily overlooking Dayton from the twenty-first floor of the Centre City Building. After Albert’s death in 2002, Esther moved to an assisted living complex in Cincinnati. There she renewed old friendships, taught knitting and indulged her passionate interest in sports. Esther threw out the “first ball” at the Cincinnati Reds Game on May 6, 2007. She threw the ball from the pitcher’s mound over the home plate! Esther is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Vail Miller; and her son and daughter-in-law, Albert and Margaret Vontz. Her grandchildren are Vail Miller Jr. (Leslie), Brooke Hice (Sean), Michael Miller (Marissa) and Albert Willi Vontz IV. Her great-grandchildren are Grayson and Annie Miller, Rocco and Mason Hice and Wyatt Miller. Mary Ellen Betz is a much loved niece. All her family and her many friends mourn the loss of this most remarkable lady. Rootsie Tootsie, Old Granny! You are loved more than you know. A private service with family only, will be held at Woodland Mausoleum. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 26 Broadway, 14th floor, New York, NY 10004.
