Franklin Tillman Hoernemann

June 24, 1920 — May 8, 2012

HOERNEMANN, Franklin T., of Centerville, passed away peacefully at Miami Valley Hospital after a short illness on May 8th, 2012. Frank was born June 24, 1920 in Lima, OH, the second son of Rev. Dr. T.W. and Mrs. Hoernemann. The family moved to New Philadelphia in 1929 where he graduated from its local high school in 1938 and was the starting guard in the state basketball championship game of that year. After graduation from Heidelberg College in 1942, he received a commission as a Marine Corp Officer, serving as a Captain in the Pacific Islands theatre. Upon his discharge from the service, he embarked on a forty year career in the YMCA, starting at the North Canton Association, where he was named Man of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce in 1950. In 1956 he was called to the Dayton Y and was named General Executive in 1961, a position he held until his retirement in 1985, a tenure eclipsed on only by the legendary David A. Sinclair, founder of the present Sinclair Community College. He also represented the Dayton Y on area, regional, national, and international YMCA boards, committees and related organizations. He was instrumental in the development and expansion of facilities in the Dayton area, including Camp Kern, Oakwood, Fairborn, and the Central Branch; as well as the formation of the new branches in Huber Heights, South Suburban Y; and the development of the West Area YMCA. One of the highlights of his career was attending three world conferences of the YMCA. He was a 56 year member and past president of the Dayton Rotary Club, and also served as chairman of the local Rotary Foundation chapter. He was a long time member of the Hale and Oak Creek United Church of Christ, serving as an elder and President of both generations, most recently retiring from that post in 2009 from the Oak Creek Church. He served on the boards of the United Church of Christ Ohio Conference, the Dayton United Way, the MonDay correctional program for young adults, and was past president of the Metropolitan Churches United. He also served as past president of the Parish Resource Board and the Ohio Association of Y Executives. His numerous awards and honors include a Distinguished Alumni Citation from Heidelberg College, and Retiree of the Year Award from the YMCA Retired Directors Association. In 2007, he was named the recipient of the Ben Herbster Award, representing the Trinity Community of Beavercreek for leadership and service to humanity. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, College Football Hall of Fame Coach Paul Hoernemann and his wife Joan, of Tiffin; a brother-in-law, Robert Kappeler, his wife Helen of Dover; double cousin, Calvin Hoernemann and his wife Lucille, of Pennsylvania. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Martha, also of Centerville; two sons, Jack (Terri) of Butler Township and Richard of Bowling Green; a daughter, Susan Menke (Dave) of Troy; a granddaughter, Kara Hoernemann of Clayton; two grandsons, Jonathan and Justin Menke of Troy. A memorial service will be held at 3:30pm on Saturday, May 26 at Oak Creek United Church of Christ, 5280 Bigger Road, Kettering, OH 45429 with the Rev. John Konz officiating.
