Frederick William Thompson, Jr.

June 17, 1930 — January 8, 2012

THOMPSON, Frederick William Jr., age 81, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2012. Born in Plainfield, NJ, the son of Frederick Wm. Thompson and Emma Griffith Thompson. He is survived by one brother, Rev. Richard Thompson; his loving companion and wife of 58 years, Joan Elizabeth Thompson (nee Kirch); two daughters and son-in-laws, Cynthia Ellen Owens (Kenneth), Beth Ann Phifer (Dustin), and one son, Douglas Wm. Thompson; three grandchildren, Jared James Owens, Allison Joy McIntosh (Dr. Christopher), Anna Elizabeth Caldwell (Zachary); and two great-grandchildren, Ella Brooke and Austin Brandt McIntosh. Bill was an active member of Fairmont Presbyterian Church for 50 years where he served as an Elder. Bill graduated from Rutgers University in 1952 with honors and began his career at Wright Patterson AFB where he achieved the grade of Captain before becoming a civilian employee. His career with the Air Force spanned 35 years. His first assignment was as a Fire Prevention Engineer in the Equipment Laboratory (WADC) where products were being studied to eliminate fires in aircrafts. Later he worked in the Environmental Control Branch of the Flight Dynamics Laboratory (AFFDL) as a Chemical Engineer. There he researched oxygen concentration systems and chemical problems in atmosphere control. He completed management studies and programs, notably at Battelle Institute, MIT and the Air Force School of Engineering. In 1974 he continued his work as a Supervisory Engineer in the Management Operations Office (AFWAL). In 1976 Bill received an Outstanding Performance Rating for his work as a Plans & Programs Engineer. When Bill retired in 1986 he became interested in fine woodworking and became a master cabinetmaker. He designed many beautiful articles of furniture as well as children's toys and smaller objects. He was a member of the Western Ohio Woodworkers. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Family will greet friends from 6:00-8:00pm on Friday, January 13, 2012 at ROUTSONG FUNERAL HOME, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Fairmont Presbyterian Church, 3705 Far Hills Ave., Kettering with Rev. Bob Wade officiating.
