George Daniel Shellabarger

February 17, 1908 — April 24, 2005

ROUTSONG FUNERAL HOME, Inc. SHELLABARGER, George Daniel, age 97, a long-time resident of Oakwood, died Sunday, April 24, at the Westminster-Thurber Retirement Community in Columbus, Ohio. George was born Feb. 17, 1908 to Olive Frances Good and Albert Dorvin Shellabarger in Clayton, Ohio, and was reared in the Dayton area where both the Shellabarger and Good families were early settlers. George graduated from Steele High School in Dayton in 1926. Four years later he received a Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University in Columbus where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. George worked for U. S. Steel and Columbus Coated Fabrics in Columbus before assuming management and ownership of the family business, S.W.S. Chevrolet of Dayton, where he worked from 1946 to 1959. He then managed the S.W.S. Parking Garage on 1st Street in Dayton until his retirement. George was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Stillwater Lodge, AASR (Scottish Rite), Antioch Shrine, Kiwanis Club, the Dayton Country Club, Rod & Reel Club, Criterion Club, and Junto, all in Dayton. George Shellabarger is remembered as a jovial fellow who always had a kind greeting for the people he met. He was well-known around Dayton in the business and social communities and knew many early Daytonians by name as he exclusively sold and serviced their Chevrolet cars and trucks in the late forties and early fifties. His generosity is well-documented in gifts to the Dayton Children’s Hospital, The Dayton Foundation, and others throughout his lifetime. George will be missed. He leaves son Steven M. Shellabarger with partner Andy Miller of Columbus; daughter-in-law Carol Downing Shellabarger Green with husband Ben Green of Powell; grandchildren Scott of Columbus, Doug with wife Lisa of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Suzanne with husband Ted Harrell of Crawfordville, Fla.; and great-grandchildren Sarah and Hannah Shellabarger. He is also survived by step-children James Jolly of Hendersonville, North Carolina, and Joanne Jolly Hunt of Dayton; as well as several more grandchildren and great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by wives Wilma Myers and Louise Wampler Jolly, and by son Dan Good Shellabarger. Friends are invited to remember George Shellabarger at a memorial service at Routsong Funeral Home, 6 Oakwood Ave. at Irving, in Dayton on Saturday, April 30, at 11:00 AM . Private burial will follow at the family gravesite in Englewood.
