Howard Nellis Thiele

June 22, 1930 — July 27, 2015

THIELE, Howard N. Jr. age 85, beloved husband of "Lonnie" was called home by Jesus, leaving us with many cherished memories. Howard was a very respected, sincere and considerate man and a valued member of the community. He is preceded in death by his parents, Howard N. and Irma L. Thiele of Oakwood. He is survived by his loving wife "Lonnie" aka Alma (Kuhn). She was his ever loving constant companion and best friend. They were always together and both enjoyed life to the fullest. Surviving are his loving children, daughter, Leslie A. Andreae (George M.D.); sons, Howard N. Thiele III (Sue) and Craig S. Thiele M.D. (Melanie); and a loving stepson Derek J. Nemeth (Michelle); Grandchildren, Chris, Liz (Patrick), Laura (Chris), Andrew, Courtney (Ryan), Kyle, Anne, Eli, Allie and Cole. Missing Howard will be his loving precious cats, Kitty Boy, Sharkie and Schmookie. Howard was born and lived his entire life in Dayton, a graduate of Oakwood H.S. (Best all-around Senior Man award). Howard received his B.A. Magna Cum Laude in Government from Miami U. (Most outstanding senior award). He was a member of the track team (shot put). He continued at the University of Michigan School of Law (Juris Doctor, with Distinction) in 1955. Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa (Scholastic Honorary), Phi Eta Sigma Omicron Delta Kappa (Leadership Honorary), Phi Alpha Delta (Law Fraternity) and an editor of the Michigan Law Review, a member of the Barrister's Society (Leadership Honorary) and Order of the Coif. He was formerly a member of the Moraine Country Club, the Engineers Club of Dayton, the Lawyers Club and the Dayton Racquet Club. After graduating from law school, he served 2 years as a legal officer (1st Lieutenant) in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at W.P.A.F.B. Dayton, O. (with an Honorable Discharge). He became a partner in the law firm of Smith & Schnacke and subsequently in the successor law firm of Thompson Hine. Retired December 31, 1995. He was a member of the American Bar Association's Business Law Section and the Ohio State Bar Association. He served as a member of the Banking and Commercial Law Section of the Ohio State Bar Association for 14 years. He concentrated his practice in general corporate, real property, and commercial law, and served as an officer and director to a number of corporate clients. Howard served as President of the Board of Trustees of the Dayton Art Institute, Chairman of the Board of the Dayton Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, Chairman of the Board of the Dayton Free Enterprise Foundation, President of the Associate Board of the Dayton Art Institute and President of the Discussion Club of Dayton. He also served as an officer and board member of the Dayton Council on World Affairs, the Engineering and Science Foundation of Dayton, the Engineering and Science Hall of Fame, the Dayton Fund for Home Rehabilitation, Junior Achievement of Dayton and the Miami Valley, and served as a director and officer of a number of business corporations. At the time of his death, he was a very respected member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. The family will receive and greet friends at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Rahn Rd & Wilmington Pike on Sat, August 1, 2015, from 10am-12pm. Following will be a funeral service at 12:00pm officiated by Pastor Richard Schneider. Followed by a private burial at Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton.
