Jack O. Moody

July 18, 1929 — February 1, 2015

MOODY, Jack Owen, Jr., age 85, of Washington Township passed away Sunday, February 1, 2015. Born in Dillon, SC, July 18, 1929, Jack was an Eagle Scout and at the tender age of 13, too young, but determined to serve his country, instead devoted himself to training his Doberman Turk for military service. In 1943 Jack was enrolled at the Belmont Abbey Prep School, where he garnered both adulation and notoriety for pulling pranks on the unsuspecting Benedictine monks. In 1946 Jack trained at Parris Island and served in the United States Marine Corps during WW II. After an honorable discharge in 1949, Jack received his bachelor's degree in Education from the University of North Carolina in 1952, followed by post-graduate courses at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. Jack's career included many years in advertising, free-lance writing, and teaching college-level creative writing. A jazz enthusiast, Jack frequented Dayton's Jazz Central and Gilly's, and through his poetry and other writings celebrated life, love, nature and music. He was a member of the Miami Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and an active volunteer for SICSA. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Nannie (Smith) Moody, son Jack O. Moody III, and brothers Colonel Reuben "Cotton" Moody, and Brigadier General Peter R. Moody. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Nancy (Burgess) Moody, daughter Linda (Moody) Chromick, son-in-law Eric R. Chromick, grandson Seth F. Chromick, brother Jerry W. Moody, and numerous beloved friends and relatives. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 4:00 PM Sunday, February 15, 2015 at the Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd, Kettering, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 PM with Reverend Mary Moore officiating. The family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to the staff of Brighton Gardens for Jack's wonderful care, and also for the care given by Hospice of Dayton. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to SICSA (Society for the Improvement of Stray Animals: www.sicsa.org), 2600 Wilmington Pike, Dayton, OH 45419, or to Hospice of Dayton.
