STONE, J.V. (Jean Vernon); age 83, passed away Saturday, August 25, 2007 at Kettering Medical Center. Born September 29, 1923 to Rev. Merrill V. and Mabel Stone. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Sydney R. Stone. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Elenora M. (Weiskircher), Centerville; his children, Sharma Jean Stone, Centerville; Jeffrey Vernon Stone and his wife Lisa (Grasso), Westerville; and Scot A. Stone and his wife Mary Ann (Welsh), Centerville; and his six grandchildren, Jodie and husband Mark (Rosko), Ashley, Taylor, Justin, Christopher and Sean Stone; and great granddaughter Meredith Rosko; sister-in-laws, Lila Hackett, Parma Heights, Ohio; Helen Weiskircher, Elizabeth Township, PA; nieces and nephews, Jay A. Weiskircher, Centerville; Debra Costello (Weiskircher), Greensburg, PA; Craig Hackett, Wallingford, CT; Todd Hackett, Plantation City, FL; Tracey Welsh (Hackett), Parma, OH; Terry Spuhler (Stone) and Elizabeth Lott (Stone), Fountain Valley, CA. J.V. was a member of the McKeesport Pennsylvania State Championship Debate Team. He was a World War II Army veteran and served in the Pacific Theatre. J.V. graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, Class of 1948 and obtained his Juris Doctorate degree from University of Pittsburgh School of Law, Class of 1952. He then worked for Allstate Insurance Company in Columbus, Akron and Cleveland before moving to Centerville in 1964 to start his private law practice. He and son Scot, practiced law together until 1992 when he retired from Stone & Stone. From 1968 to 2000, J.V. served as a Centerville Councilman, Deputy Mayor (1973 & 1975), and was elected as Mayor of Centerville in 1979 and served for four years. J.V. was a member of numerous committees and boards including Director of Seniors, Inc. of Centerville/Washington Twp., Council Liason to Centerville Historical Society and Sister City Committee; President of Mayors and Managers Association of Montgomery County; Supervisory Council on Crime and Delinquency; Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission Delegate; Montgomery County Review Committee Delegate; National League of Cities Delegate; Advisory Board Member of Sycamore Medical Center; Chairman of the Board of Centerville Americana Festival; Chairman of Lower Great Miami Basin Council; Vice Chairman and Chairman of Miami Valley Cable Council; Camp St. Mary’s Board of Director; Otterbein-St. Mary’s Advisory Board; Chairman of Centerville Charter Review Committee and Chairman of Centerville Methodist Church Building Committee. He was also a member of Linden Lodge No. 637 Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio Unity; Chapter No. 16 Royal Arch Masons; Dayton Commandery No. 68; Knights Templar, Antioch Shrine; Miami Valley Military Affairs Committee; Republican Presidential Task Force. He will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, dad and grandpa, for his wonderful sense of humor and starting a long and cherished family tradition of taking summer vacations on the beaches of Cape Cod and Garden City, South Carlolina. The family would like to give special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Kettering Medical Center for their wonderful care of J.V. Main Street, Centerville and funeral services will be held on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Centerville United Methodist Church, 63 E. Franklin St. in Centerville.
