Margaret "Marge" Thomas

Margaret (Marge) Svensson Thomas passed away peacefully on the evening of Monday, January 28, 2019, at the age of 82. She was born in 1936 to Grace and Olof Svensson in Chicago, Illinois. She was a graduate of North Park Academy and Northwestern University, where she was a dedicated member of the Tri Delta sorority.
After moving to Dayton, Ohio in 1968 to raise her family of 4 daughters, Marge found time to volunteer her talents with many organizations in and around the Dayton area, notably Children’s Hospital and Life Essentials. She also continued as an active Tri Delta alumna in the Dayton chapter. As the years went on, she was dedicated to maintaining close family relationships, hosting large family reunions every summer and at Christmas with her home filled to the brim with daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren as well as other relatives from Chicago and Sweden. She also enjoyed her many friends, celebrating the Christmas holidays with her annual Swedish “Glogg” party.
Marge was known for her welcoming nature, for her devoted friendships, and for her love of her seven grandchildren, who knew her affectionately as “Grammy.” She will be incredibly missed as the strong supportive matriarch of her family.
Marge is survived by her four loving daughters and their families including Debbie, Arik, Gracie and Thomas Sherk; Susie, John and Maggie Glynn; Cindy, David, Garrett and Catherine Knipp; and Cathy, Greg, Sophie and Michael Hunter. She is also remembered by her cousins, Susi and Ken Herlin in Chicago, and Git Laven in Sweden. A special thank you to Barbara Taylor and her other caregivers over the years.
A reception in memory of Marge will be held at the Dayton Country Club on Saturday, February 9, 2019 from 11:00 to 2:00, with a Celebration of Life service to be held at 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Westminster Presbyterian Church Music Ministry of Dayton and the Oakwood Schools Education Foundation.
