Marlene Joyce Gilmore

Marlene "Joyce" Gilmore, age 78, of Kettering, passed away on Thursday, July 2nd after a long and courageous battle against cancer. She and her fraternal twin, Janice Landon, were born on February 23, 1937, to Margaret and Frank Wright in Troy, Ohio. Joyce graduated from Troy High School and worked at Hobart Manufacturing before meeting her husband, Howard, 59 years ago. Joyce and Janice married good friends, Howard Gilmore and Chuck Landon, in a double wedding on August 10, 1957. Joyce moved to Dayton in the early sixties to raise her family while supporting Howard who worked long hours to start a new business. She was a wonderful, passionate and supportive mother who loved to camp and bowl. Joyce was known for her baking, gardening and generosity, as well as, for her daily walks with her best "friend" Mandy their Akita. As Grandma, she played an active role in her grandchildren's lives whether watching them as babies, attending sporting events or playing hide and seek during family gatherings. Her family was her life. Her parents, her husband, her brother-in-law, Chuck, and grandchild, Dylan Shimmin, precede her in death. She is survived by her two children Cheryl (Don) Shimmin, Kettering and Eric (Kathie) Gilmore, Centerville; grandchildren Kyle and Kari Shimmin and Carson Gilmore; sisters Joann (Dick) Monroe and Janice Landon; numerous nieces and nephews; and her other "family" the Mumpowers "Sam", Kathy, Anne and Glen of Oakwood. The family will receive friends from 2-4p on Thursday, July 9th at the Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd. Funeral services will be held at 4:00p following the visitation hours. Family will greet friends following the service for a reseption until 6:30 PM at the funeral home. The family would like to thank Hospice of Dayton, Dr. Hirt and Dr. Iberico for their compassion and care during her journey. If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SICSA or Hospice of Dayton.
