Mary Ellen Nee Scarff Martin

MARTIN, Mary Ellen (nee Scarff), age 90, of Columbus formerly of Dayton, passed away Saturday, December 4, 2010. Mary born and raised in New Carlisle, she graduated from Olive Branch High School and Purdue University where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, was Vice President of Associated Women Students, member of Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities, President of Gold Peppers (Senior’s Woman Honorary) and chairman of the Purdue Freshman Orientation Program. After graduation from college, she served our country in the Spars United States Coast Guard (Women’s Reserve), where she achieved Lt. Senior Grade in charge of recruiting for the First Naval District. Mary was a Past President and a 50 yr. member of the Garden Club of Dayton. Past Chairman of Zone X for the Garden Club of America. Mary was active in overseeing the design and planning of city parks of the Dayton Miami River corridor. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Dayton. Mary is preceded in death by her husband Charles F. Martin; parents Max and Ina (nee Studebaker) Scarff; son Charles Scarff Martin; daughter Nancy Martin Kennedy; and sister Nancy Scarff Baker. She is survived by children David Martin of KY, Paul D. Martin of Columbus, and Mary (Scott) Martin Bordner of MD; sisters Jane Scarff`McKinney, Maxine Goodall Schildknecht, Phyllis Milliken; grandchildren Joshua, Hannah, and Haley Bordner, Rusty Kennedy and Jennifer (Adam) Kennedy Burns and two great-granddaughters Nancy Kate and Adelyn Burns. Memorial services will be held Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 2:00pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Wilkinson St., Dayton. Family will greet friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to Westminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or Cox Arboretum, 6733 Springboro Pike Dayton, Ohio 45449.
