Ruth E. Penner

PENNER, Ruth E., nee Metzger, age 101, of Dayton, OH passed away on January 22, 2013 after a short illness. Ruth was born on September 9, 1911 in Dayton, OH. Ruth was an intelligent, well-read woman who made friends wherever she went. She was gracious and had a smile for everyone. She was well-loved not only by her family and friends, but in the last few years, she was loved by the women and men who cared for her in her home, the hospitals, skilled care and assisted living facilities where she lived. She was a graduate from Steele High School and Oberlin College (Phi Beta Kappa), with additional studies at Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. Ruth was a charter member of the National Association of Social Workers, was a case worker for the Children's Bureau of Memphis, Tennessee, and then of the Dayton Children's Bureau. Later she served as a supervisor at the Montgomery County Children's Services and then the Catholic Charities Day Care program. She was a member of the Trotwood United Church of Christ. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur H. Penner; brother, Allan Hubert Metzger and his wife, Margaret (Marney); sister, Jeannette Winifred Forbes (nee: Metzger) and her husband, Jack; and her parents, Jessie Jeannette Sellman Metzger and Gustave Adolph Metzger. She is survived by a daughter, Emilie R. Ratterman (Bob) of Oxford, OH and a son, Richard A. Penner of Dayton, OH; a grandson, Christian; two granddaughters, Meggan and Elise; one great-granddaughter, Abby; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and close family friends, William, Jerry and Andy. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00am on Friday, January 25, at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering, Ohio. The funeral service will follow at 11:00am. Burial at Woodland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wegerzyn Garden's Foundation, 1301 East Siebenthaler Avenue, Dayton, OH 45414.
