S. Darrell Apt

November 28, 1931 — March 19, 2020

APT, S. Darrell, II., DVM, age 88 of Oakwood, OH, passed away March 19 2020. Darrell was born November 28, 1931 in Kalamazoo, MI to Scott and Mabel (Sheets) Apt.

He was a 1950 graduate of Fairmont High School, received his undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University in 1955, and in 1957, graduated from OSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine. While at OSU, he was an All American lacrosse player, captain of the lacrosse team, and led the program to many winning seasons. He continued his passion for lacrosse by refereeing college and club lacrosse for over 35 years. In 2008, he was honored by OSU for being a pioneer of men’s lacrosse at the university.

Darrell opened his own practice, Apt Veterinary Clinic, serving the community by taking care of their beloved pets for over 45 years. He was a member and past president of the Miami Valley Veterinary Medical Association, helped found the Dayton Emergency Veterinary Clinic where he served on the board for a number of years and served as a volunteer veterinarian to SISCA, Montgomery County Animal Shelter and Humane Society of Greater Dayton.

Darrell served as chair of the Friends of Smith Gardens for many years where he raised funds for the renovation of the gardens and the garden house. He was a member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, Oakwood Fraternal Order of Police, a chair and member of the Oakwood Environmental Committee and Beautification Committee, Sigma Chi Fraternity, a volunteer at Hospice of Dayton and Kettering Memorial Hospital. Darrell also served on the City of Oakwood Board of Health. He helped organize the Oakwood Indian Guide program and was the first Chief of the organization. Darrell was also recognized and honored by the City of Oakwood and awarded the title of 1999 Oakwood VIP for his commitment and involvement over the years to the city.

Darrell enjoyed his trips to the family’s lake cottage in Michigan where he gathered with family and friends and enjoyed being the avid outdoorsman. He was the embodiment of the family man and was compassionate about life. He dedicated himself to the caring for and love of all pets and animals. Darrell was always willing to help those in need and greeted everyone with a twinkle in his eye and an unforgettable smile.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jo Furay. Darrell is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Carol Collins; children Scott, Jerry (Lisa), Kelly (Gary) Parisi, and Polly (Bob) Page; grandchildren Sidney, Austin, Evan, Kacie, Tyler, Ben, and Brendan; and his chesapeake bay retriever, Madison, who visited him daily while at Otterbein, Springboro where he was always surrounded by family and friends. A special thank you to the staff at Otterbein Springboro for taking excellent care of him while at that facility.

A Celebration of Darrell’s life will be held 1-4PM on Sunday, November 28 at Dayton Country Club, 555 Kramer Rd, Dayton, OH 45419. Remembrances will be shared at 2PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Smith Memorial Gardens, City of Oakwood, 105 Patterson Road, Oakwood, Ohio 45419 or Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church.
