August 8, 1916 — August 26, 2015

PERNA, Virginio, age 99, formerly of New Canaan, Connecticut passed away. He was born on August 8, 2016, in Rose, Italy, to the late Giuseppi Perna and Maria Smeriglio. Virginio immigrated to the United States in 1933, at the age of sixteen, and began working as a trained cobbler. During WWII he served in the United States Army, 124th Infantry, in both the Asia Pacific and European Theaters. After the war, he resumed shoe business and owned his own retail shoe stores throughout his career. Virginio was a founding and longstanding member of the Italian Club of New Canaan. He was an army bandsman during the war, and continued to play the clarinet, as a member of the New Canaan Town Band for over 40 years. He loved sports of all kinds, and was an avid bowler and bocci player. Most important, Virginio was a dedicated husband and father. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Celestina Perna; and survived by his sons, Richard (Merideth) Perna of Dayton, and Joseph (Lucy) Perna of Los Angeles. Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of Dayton, Dayton, OH.
