BRECKENRIDGE, Louis C., age 94, of Bethany Village, Centerville, OH, made his last flight on January 8, 2018, to join Joyce, his beloved wife of 71 years in the afterlife.
He leaves his daughters, Bonnie Cogan and Rae Chivers of Dayton, OH and Cathy (Ron) Bohnlein of Buckeye, AZ; son, Terry (Sandy) Breckenridge of Morrow, OH; grandchildren, Sue, Tony, Trevor, Ivy, Erin, and Kimberly; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Natalee, Chase and Breck as well as numerus other family members and friends.
The bombing of Pearl Harbor happened after graduation from George Washington High School in Los Angeles in 1941. He married his high school sweetheart and enlisted as an Aviation Cadet for Pilot training. After he graduated he went overseas as a B-25 Pilot and flew 68 combat missions in France, Italy, Austria and Yugoslavia. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Six Air Medals, Two Presidential Unit Citations and Five Battle stars. Following WW II, he was relieved from active duty and went to work for Northrop Aircraft in Los Angeles in 1945. While at Northrop he was involved with the early Flying Wings, the F-89, A-9, T-38, F-5, F-17 (which became the Navy F-18) and the YF-23. His last assignment was with the B-2 Stealth Bomber. During this time he flew the Douglas A-26 invader Aircraft in the Air Force Reserve. He was recalled to active duty at WPAFB during the Korean War and assigned as Executive Officer of the Analysis Division of the Air Technical Intelligence Center, returning to Northrop in 1953. In 1959 he was transferred to the Dayton Office.
His community service including chairman of the Military Affairs Committee of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, President Dayton Aerospace National Industrial Association, President and Chairman of the National Aviation Hall of Fame, Member of The DFC Society, Order of Deadalians, 57th Bomb Wing Association and early member of Sycamore Creek Country Club. He retired from Northrop Corporation in 1989 as the Regional Vice President and Manager of the Dayton Office after 44 years with the company.
Family will receive friends at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd. Kettering, OH between the hours of 2:00 pm-3:00 pm on Friday, January 12, 2018. A memorial service will follow at the funeral home starting at 3:00 pm. A private internment service will be held at David’s Cemetery.
