Why is it important to acknowledge the loss of a pet?
"The ache that pet loss can trigger in many people and the tendency to suppress it can have an adverse effect on a persons well beings. By not dealing with their feelings, people allow the pain to remain unrelieved, like an untended sore that never quite heals and interferes with normal functioning. When pet loss is repressed in childhood-by the parents, for example, who minimize their youngsters' feelings over a cat or dog - it often comes back to haunt the adult. Unreleased grief stays with us. When we suffer a later loss, all of the pain we held down rises to the surface. We are, in effect, carrying a double load, mourning both the present and the past loss."
