Anne Sawyer Greene

April 19, 1920 — May 23, 2003

age 83 of Dayton, died May 23, 2003. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Moraine Country Club, and Miami Valley Hunt and Polo Club. Active with many civic and cultural organizations, she was the first woman Director of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, The Dayton Foundation, and The First National Bank (now National City); in addition, she chaired the Dayton Human Relations Commission, and was on the board of Miami Valley Hospital, Planned Parenthood of Miami Valley, Victoria Theatre, and local and national boards of the United Way. For several years, she managed and helped revive the Victoria Theatre. At her death, board memberships included Carillon Historical Park, Dayton Art Institute, Dayton Foundation, YWCA, and League of Woman Voters. Her awards included: Top Ten Women of Dayton, Judges’ Award(1981); Governor’s Award for the Arts(1987); National Conference Friendship Award(1997); YWCA Women of Influence Award(1999); Katherine Kennedy Brown Community Leadership Award(2001); Walk of Fame Inductee(2002); and Citizen Legion of Honor Award(2002). Preceded in death by her father Charles Sawyer in 1979, her mother Margaret Johnston Sawyer in 1937, her husband, John B. Greene in 1997, her brother Charles Sawyer, Jr. in 1967, her sister Jean Sawyer Weaver in 2000, her daughter Gertrude “Jill” B. Schultz in 1990, and her granddaughter, Elizabeth Jane Anne Williams in 1983. Survived by her 4 daughters, Judith G. Whiting (Peter) of California, Valerie G. Higgins of Washington State, Mary Elizabeth Welpton (Douglas) of Florida, and Susan W. Davenport-Spigle (W. Edgar) of Virginia; 3 sons, John P. Williams, Jr.(Francie) of Cincinnati, Alexander J. Williams(Sue) of Dayton, John B. Greene, Jr.(Sally) of Washington State; 11 grandsons; 2 granddaughters; 13 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, John Sawyer(Ruth) and Edward, both of Cincinnati. Funeral Services will be held at 11A.M. on Wednesday, May 28 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave., Dayton, OH 45419 with The Rev. John F. Koepke, III officiating. Private visitation, family only. A private burial will be held at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church or the charity of your choice. Arrangements in care of Routsong Funeral Home.
