Barbara Maye Schaeffer Wunder

August 26, 1926 — November 28, 2020

WUNDER, Barbara Maye Schaeffer, age 94 of Kettering, Ohio and Bethany Retirement Village of Centerville, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 28, 2020 in her condo surrounded by family.

Barbara was born on August 26, 1926 in Sturgis, Michigan. She graduated from Lima High School and won a scholarship to attend Ball State University. Leaving Ball State to marry the love of her life, John Wunder, Sr. Barbara and John were engaged in 1944 and married in 1945, almost 73 years of marriage at the time of his passing in 2018. Together Barbara and John had 7 children: Nicholas, Margaret, William, John, Jr., Elizabeth, Robert, and Rachael.

Barbara was a member of Fairmont Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and was very active in the Double's Club. She was a homemaker who also ran a Dayton Daily News newspaper boy delivery pickup location for many years.

Barbara was a loving wife and mother who always had a kind word for everyone. She had marvelous artistic abilities, was a great seamstress, and exceptional cook. Barbara’s chocolate chip cookie recipe was infamous. Her house was a hub of neighborhood activity with plenty of delicious food and fun for everyone. One regularly saw her adding another potato to the pot to stretch dinner for an additional mouth who was invited at the last minute.

Barbara played bridge, participated in the local garden club, and loved music which was always a part of the family day. One of her most loved phrases with her children was: "You are my favorite". She would say that to each of her children, usually in front on another child to ensure that everyone knew how much they met to her. She made sure all her children understood that that they were each her favorite, equally and unequivocally.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents, Earl Nicholas and Elna Schaeffer of Howe, Indiana; sons, John Jr. and infant William; daughter-in-law, Amy Wunder; son-in-law, Al Wyrick; siblings, Alice and Becky; cousin, June .
