C. David Greathouse, Jr.

November 27, 1928 — January 25, 2020

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, C. David Greathouse Jr., age 91, of Kettering, Ohio, passed away Saturday, January 25, 2020 at Kettering Memorial Hospital. David was born at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio in 1928. He was preceded in death by parents, Claude David and Romaine Campbell Greathouse of San Antonio, Texas and sisters, Eleanor Lewis of Baltimore, Maryland, and Anita Whitney of Houston, Texas. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Lois; children, Mark (Carol), Jane, and Greg (Marsi); dear grandchildren, Matthew, Olivia, David, and Meredith; sister-in-law, Phyllis Via; and many faithful nieces and nephews.

David was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and a member of the class of 1946. Upon graduation he worked in Dayton, Ohio where he met his future wife Lois Elaine Thorpe. After eloping to Lexington, Kentucky in 1948, he and Lois settled in Dayton working in industry before answering his call to duty to serve in the Army during the Korean War. After the end of the war and his honorable discharge from the service, he returned to Dayton with his wife where they started their family while he put himself through the University of Dayton during the day and worked at the Standard Register Company at night.

Following his graduation from the University of Dayton with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1958, his family resided in Huber Heights, Ohio where David proudly continued his service to his country for 36 years as a Federal Government employee as a Contracting Officer at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base with a series of assignments in which he assumed increasing command responsibilities. David later furthered his education receiving a Master’s Degree from Central Michigan University. He was active in his community as a founding member of the Huber Heights Junior Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Masonic Lodge Millennium Lodge No. 779, AASR Valley of Dayton Antioch Shrine, a member of Toastmasters International, an active member of the Trinity Baptist Church and frequent blood donor with the Dayton Blood Bank. As his family grew, David relocated them to Kettering, Ohio where he was a strong supporter of the Kettering City Schools. He was also active in his new community where he served on the Board of Directors of the Kettering Wee Falcons Football Club, coached boys basketball teams for several years, as a member of Fairhaven Church, and as a member of the American Legion Post 0598.

Upon his retirement from the Federal Government in 1989, David developed new interests and read avidly as a life-long learner. He was a 25 year volunteer at Kettering Hospital. David and Lois travelled extensively with dear friends and relatives throughout the United States in North America and four other continents. He particularly enjoyed their time in Egypt, China, and their many trips to countries in Europe. He was also a proud participant on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. David was born into a family with a keen interest in politics and current events. During the course of his life his views evolved and he became a strong supporter of the Republican Party. He also enjoyed outside activities spending time gardening, landscaping his home, and participating in organized Volksmarches throughout the Midwest. David and Lois enjoyed local nightlife and entertaining their circle of friends. They were long time subscribers of the Dayton Philharmonic Pops, Dayton Opera, and Miami Valley Community Concert Association.

David had a strong, understated personality with a great sense of humor. He was confident and did not find a need to be loud to be heard and respected. David loved and accepted others. He did not seek the attention of others but always shined brightly by the success of the family and friends around him that he helped lift up. He was a kind man with a deep Christian faith who lived a wonderful life and will be missed by those that were honored to know him.
