Col Russell E. Sweetman, Sr.

April 29, 1933 — February 17, 2016

SWEETMAN, Russell Eugene Sr., Colonel (USAR RET), age 82, of Centerville, OH passed away February 17, 2016. COL Sweetman was a native of Ohio born in Dayton but lived most of his life in Centerville, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Rachel Marie Sweetman; and his parents, George O. & Bertha J. Sweetman of Columbus, Ohio. He is survived by 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Russell E. Sweetman, Jr. of Troy, OH and Andrew B. & Susan Sweetman of Albuquerque, NM; 2 sisters, Betty Jo Kelley of Centerville, OH & Patricia Rae Mowery of Dublin, OH; grandchildren, Sierra Rachel, Andrew Jacob, and Savanah Arleen; nine nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews. A General contractor since 1967, he was CEO of Mid American Building Corporation (Emeritus). COL Sweetman served his country for over 30 years as a member of the US Army Reserve, serving with the 82nd Airborne Division, 101 Air Assault Division and 11 years as a member of the 11 Special Forces Group (Green Beret) and as member of the Army General Staff (DESOPS) Pentagon, Washington, D.C. He also served with the Admission Dept. U.S. Military Academy West Point, NY. He graduated from Armed Forces Staff College and the Army War College, Carsile Barracks, PA and the University of Dayton. Col Sweetman served his community for 14 years as a member of the Centerville city Council, 2 of those years as Vice Mayor, and also served on many national committees as a member of the National League of Cities, Washington, DC. Family will greet friends from 5:00-8:00pm on Friday, February 26, 2016 at Routsong Funeral Home, 81 N. Main St., Centerville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Church of the Incarnation, 7415 Far Hills Ave., Centerville. Entombment in Calvary Cemetery in the Station of the Cross Mausoleum with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to SICSA, 2600 Wilmington Pike, Kettering, OH 45419.
