Carole Ruth Gravette

November 11, 1935 — January 5, 2004

(Coles), passed away Monday, January 5, 2004 at Hospice of Dayton after a long battle with cancer. Carole was born in Cleveland, OH on November 11, 1935, and was raised in Lakewood, OH. She graduated from Lakewood High School in 1953 and Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Science in education in 1957. Carole was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She taught in the Lakewood Schools and at the old Oak Creek Elementary and retired while teaching at John F. Kennedy Elementary as a special education teacher in the Kettering Schools. She retired due to her illness. She was the 1993 recipient of the Chester A. Roush Educational Hall of Fame award for distinguished service to education. Carole was also a member of Oak Creek United Church of Christ in Kettering and its Women’s Guild. She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Ruth Kitsteiner Coles. Carole is survived by her life-long friend and husband of 46 years, Gary; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Sue and Steve Constable of Rochester, MI, and Lisa Ann and Jerry Apt of Washington Township; her dear grandchildren, Jessica, Matthew, and Michael Constable and Evan, Kacie and Brendan Apt; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Neal and Janet Gravette and Jeanne Reynolds of the Cleveland area; her cousins, Wayne Kitsteiner, Michelle Castaldo, Suzanne Kitsteiner and a special cousin, Andrea Gaiser; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 10 at 11:00 AM at Oak Creek United Church of Christ, Kettering, with Pastor Todd Grant Yonkman officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 4-to 8:00 PM at the Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering, Burial in David’s Cemetery, Kettering. The family wishes to thank Kettering Home Health Care and In-Home Care for the loving care and assistance they provided to Carole and her family and to Hospice of Dayton during Carole’s final days. Contributions may be made to Oak Creek United Church of Christ, 5280 Bigger Rd., Kettering, OH 45440 or the Kettering Education Foundation, 3750 Far Hills Ave., Kettering, OH 45429 in Carole’s name.
