Doris Jean Conway

CONWAY, Doris Jean, age 95, of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL, previously of Oakwood, OH, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Doris was born on November 30, 1925 in Union Township, OH to the late Melvin and Cora Wright. Doris, the youngest of five girls, was raised in Potsdam, OH and graduated from Capital University with a major in music (piano) and a minor in history. After college she became a buyer at Lazarus Department Stores. She had many passions that included music, fashion design, cooking, entertaining, and boating with her husband, Al. She was an active leader in the Dayton philanthropic community. She chaired the Dayton Opera Ball in 1976 and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Dayton Philharmonic, where she spearheaded the first Decorator Showhouse in Dayton supporting the Dayton Philharmonic. She ran the Grandview Hospital gift shop for many years. She also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Culver Educational Foundation and was President of the Culver Mothers Club. She was a long-time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Later in life, she continued her love of planning events as the activities chair for the Fountainhead Condominium Association where she resided in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea for the past 27 years.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Allyn W. Conway, in 1980, and her son, Allyn W. Conway II, in 2017. She is survived by her son, Mark A. Conway (Dawn) of Oakwood; daughter-in-law, Sandra Conway of Washington Township, OH; granddaughters, Ashley Conway Rea (Brien) of Dallas, TX and Alexandra Conway of Chicago, IL; step-grandchildren, Renee Heberling of Springboro, OH, and David (Brigid) Heberling of Springboro, OH; and 4 step-great grandchildren. The family will have a Private Service at Woodland Mausoleum. A Celebration of Life will be held when it is safe to gather in Lauderdale-by-the Sea. A special thank you to Jimmie Lee Handbreey for her care and companionship. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dayton Performing Arts Alliance at www.daytonperformingarts.org.
