GRIEST, Edwin Kenneth, age 97, passed away at the home of his daughter, Jane, in Harrison Township, Montgomery County, OH, on May 23, 2013, after a long decline. He was born in Dayton, OH, on July 9, 1915, and remained a life-long resident of the city. He is predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Ann (Smith) Griest in 2003; parents, Farrin T. and Clara B. He is survived by his children, David (Karen) Griest of NY; Jane Griest of OH; and Ellen (Michael) Griest of IN; grandchildren, Kendra (David) Rogers of NY and Kenneth Griest of MA; great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Owen Rogers, and Andrew Griest. He was a 1932 graduate of Fairview High School. He received his bachelor degree in business from Miami University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, summa cum laude, and first in his class of 1936. Pop was very proud of his academic performance. He was the first recipient of the Ramsen Cup awarded by the faculty to the most outstanding junior in the business school. Later he endowed the Edwin K. Griest/Halsey E. Ramsen Scholarship to provide funding for an annual scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding business student. Pop served in the US Navy during WWII in the Pacific theater as a Radio Technician. After his service, he returned to work for the Buckeye Iron and Brass Works as a purchasing agent and production control manager. He retired in 1984 from the Internal Revenue Service as a revenue agent. After retirement, he continued to provide tax services to many private clients and low-income taxpayers into his mid-80s. He was a 32ï‚° Mason joining the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in 1936. He served as Treasurer of the Millennium Lodge #779. Pop was a train and streetcar enthusiast. He liked to collect and save stuff and get things for free. He enjoyed talking to anyone about anything. He was a strong supporter of Miami University. Thanks to Colleen McCarty, R.N. of Gem City Home Care; Ann Watts for her caring help; and to the many home health care aides who assisted his daughter in the care of her father over the past five years. Pop will be missed very much. Family will greet friends from 5:00-7:00pm on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering, with Masonic services beginning at 7:00pm.
