Josephine "Jo" Ann Vandevander

Vandevander, Josephine "Jo" Ann, age 92, of Kettering, Ohio passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2015. She was born the daughter of Charles and Josephine (Aveni) Castignola on December 10, 1922 in New Philadelphia, Ohio. Jo was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Kenneth "Kenny" A. Vandevander. She is survived by her sister Mary (Louis) Pollili of Dover, Ohio, sister-in-law Doris (Jack) Castignola of Trenton, Michigan, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jo's interests included cooking, gardening, sewing, and sports; she and Kenny were avid fans of the University of Dayton Flyers basketball team, holding season tickets for nearly 60 years. Jo was employed in a variety of fields, namely, 30 years as a dental assistant, several years in the floral department at the local Kroger Grocery Store, and last, many years as a sales associate at the Elder-Beerman Department Store at the Dayton Mall; she finally retired at the age of 90. Jo was also a long-time member of the NCR Country Club, Italian Club of Dayton, American Legion, University of Dayton Leo Meyer Society, and a founding member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Charles, 4500 Ackerman Blvd, Kettering, on Friday, May 15, 2015 at 10:30 AM. The family will receive friends from 9:30-10:30 AM at the church, with a reception to follow the Mass.
