Nancy Alden Bumiller

December 1, 1929 — March 5, 2013

BUMILLER, Nancy Alden, Age 83, died peacefully in her home on March 5, 2013. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the first child of Roland A. and Anna K. Davis. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, William N. Bumiller; three sons, William of Los Angeles, CA, Mark (Tami) of Redmond, WA, and David (Linda) of Kettering, Ohio; six grandchildren, Sarah (Colin), Anna (Craig), Emily (Chad), Elizabeth, Tess, and Liam; a great grandchild, Chloe; three siblings, Polly, Faith and John; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Ann. Raised in Wyoming, Ohio, she went on to earn a degree in Medieval History at the University of Cincinnati. Following graduation she was appointed by the Episcopal Bishop of S. Ohio to be the founder and first Ex. Secy. of Canterbury Assn (campus ministry) at UC. Her early career also included teaching in the Release Time (week day) Religious Education program of the Council of Churches in both Cincinnati and Berkeley, CA. For many years following, she volunteered as a church school teacher, a youth advisor, a counselor at Diocesan camps and conferences, an advisor to exchange students, and sang in church choirs. She found her main calling as a Children's Librarian in Berkeley, CA Public Library, Edison School (Dayton) and the Dayton Metro Library. Along the way she earned a Masters Degree in Media Education at Wright State University. Retiring early, she helped raise three grandchildren: Anna, Emily, and Liz. She also traveled extensively, tent camping with her husband coast to coast, visiting people and places: historic sites and natural wonders. Included in her travels were explorations of the locales of her ancestors in Nova Scotia and Plymouth Bay, MA. She took pride in being one of the many descendants of John and Priscilla Alden. Her easy going manner made many friends. She had a gift for relating to and inspiring children and young adults. Her life was full. Her talents faithfully used. May she rest in peace. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 23, at 1:30pm at St Paul's Episcopal Church in Oakwood followed by a visitation in the Church Cloister. Burial in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, OH. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be made to the Dayton Food Bank, 427 Washington St., Dayton, OH 45402 or Wyoming School Foundation, 420 Springfield Pike, Cincinnati, OH 45215.
