Robert J. Bruggeman

Robert "Bob" J. Bruggeman, beloved husband of 64 years to Jamie (nee Hawkes) Bruggeman passed away on September 26, 2015 at the age of 88. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, John and Modesta Bruggeman and his beloved grandson, Jonathon Gregory Bruggeman. He is survived by his wife, Jamie, dear brothers Jack Bruggeman and Paul Bruggeman, treasured family friend Mikell Kloeters, and extended family and friends. He was a devoted father to Cathy (Greg) DeMarco, Greg (Felicia McNutt) Bruggeman, Steve (Elizabeth) Bruggeman, Roberta (Scott) Liddic, Jennifer (Chris) Stricker, and Mary (Harold) Mayton, cherished grandfather of Jessica (Will) Rosenbeck, Stephanie and Matt Bruggeman, Holly and Hunter Mayton, Morgan and Jake Liddic, Emma and Jack Bruggeman and Drew and Joe Stricker, and loving great-grandfather of Layla Rosenbeck. Bob served honorably in the US Army from 1946-1947 at the end of WW II as an Office Clerk at General Headquarters of the Far East Command in Tokyo, Japan and remained in the Reserves until 1952. His education included a BS in Education from the University of Dayton, in 1951and a MA in French from the University of Paris in 1958 as a Fulbright Scholar. Bob also received the French Government Scholarship for Graduate Studies at Western Reserve University, and he studied French at the Pau Institute in Pau, France in 1964. As the first French teacher at Beavercreek Schools, Bob taught there from 1951-1958. He also taught at Fairview High School from1958-1983, and Colonel White High School from1983-1986. After retirement, he went to work for the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office from 1986-1993 as Auctioneer of Sheriff's Sales of Real Property (usually foreclosures). Bob's time with family was the most treasured. He also played tennis, worked crossword puzzles and enjoyed anything dealing with word study, history, speaking French, home maintenance and repairs, movies, stage productions, concerts, and tourism. Interestingly, he taught Edwin C. Moses (Olympic Track Star) and sponsored a group of students, including Edwin, who toured France one summer. While in Japan, he occasionally saw General Douglas MacArthur and Emperor Hironito. He also saw Admiral Tojo in the war crimes trial. In 1980, he served as French Interpreter for a N.A.T.O. Conference held in Dayton, Ohio. His travels included these countries: Japan, China, Philippines, Guam (Military), Canada, France, Spain, England, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy. Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 from 5 pm 7 pm followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 7 pm, at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 East Stroop Road, Kettering, OH 45429. The family would like to express our thanks for the wonderful help and care given by Hospice of Dayton.
