Stella Gunning

August 27, 1921 — October 24, 2018

ROUTSONG, Stella Peggy Gunning passed away, peacefully, surrounded by family on Wednesday October 24, 2018 in Seattle, WA. Stella finally lost her long battle with congestive heart failure that had been stealing her breath and robbing her strength for years.

She was a proud member of the greatest generation, born Stella Sterling in 1921 in Independence KY, where she survived the Great Depression and WWII. She worked as a very effective Office Manager in Cincinnati, OH, until she married Richard Gunning in 1949. Shortly after she gave birth to her son, David Gunning, and her daughter Gayle Ann Gunning, in 1955. She watched this family, which had moved to Kettering, OH in 1963, blossom as David married Karen Gulino in 1978, and they produced her two grandsons: Justin Gunning in 1983 and Jonathan Gunning in 1988. Stella delighted in seeing Justin marry Ashley Ingram in 2011, and really delighted when they gave birth to her wonderful great-grandsons: Brooks Gunning in 2015 and Quinn Gunning in 2017. One of Stellas greatest pleasures was enjoying Brooks and Quinn, possibly the two cutest human beings that have ever lived. One of her latest delights was Jonathans engagement to the perfect woman for him, Katrina Linkevich, in September of this year. Stella moved to Seattle, along with David and Karen, in 2009, and spent her last years in the Brookdale Retirement Home.

Stella was an avid card playerbridge, hearts, Mahjongthat she loved to play at Brookdale. She was also an avid sports fan, especially for the University of Kentucky Wildcats, and faithfully filled out her March Madness brackets every year. Her favorite movie was Gone With the Wind; she still maintained a crush on Clark Gable. She also loved Big Band jazz, especially Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, who she enjoyed seeing in concert several times in Seattle. Stella was an enthusiastic Republican, and unfortunately (much to regret of her liberal son) this included enthusiastic support for Donald Trump! Recently, when her son told her she needed to live long enough to see Donald impeached, she responded that she wanted to live long enough to see him re-elected! Stella was a wonderful, witty, engaging women and will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing this completely unique personality.
