FITES, Sylvia, passed away on May 6, 2013, at the Wood Glen Alzheimer's Community in Dayton, Ohio. Sylvia was born in Capetown, South Africa, on July 5, 1926. She graduated from Paarl Business School in 1944 and was employed by Imperial Chemical Company until 1962. She married Donald V. Fites on June 25, 1960. He survives. She is also survived by her daughter, Linda Reed, and three grandchildren, Donald, Rachel, and Robbie. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Lionel Dempsey, and her sister, Olga Lilley. Sylvia lived in Peoria from 1968-1970, 1975-1979, 1982-2004. She accompanied her husband during assignments in Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America. Her awareness of the human condition in many countries contributed to her lifelong commitment to supporting causes to enhance the dignity of the individual. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Peoria. Along with her husband, she participated in First United Methodist charitable and missionary initiatives, as well as the faith-based work of The Salvation Army. Cremation will be accorded and Sylvia will be interred alongside her brother and sister at Mt. Hawley Cemetery in Peoria. A private memorial service and burial will be set at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Sylvia Fites Family Services Center at The Salvation Army, 401 NE Adams Street, Peoria; or the Alzheimer's Association, 606 W Glen Avenue, Peoria.
