Thomas Ross Shafor

SHAFOR, Thomas Ross passed away on Friday, July 22, at the age of 83. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Evelyn Shafor; sister, Linda; and wife, Ann (Meriweather) Shafor. He is survived by his son, Aaron; sister, Sally; nephew, J.R. Tipton; and niece, Casey (Todd) Boardwine; along with many caring cousins and terrific friends. Tom graduated from Fairmont High School in 1957 and enrolled in the Design, Architecture, and Art program at the University of Cincinnati where he received his degree in Architecture. After working for Harry Meisel and Associates, he went on to form the architecture firm of Shafor and Johnson, Inc. with his partner Jerry Johnson. During this time, he designed many area businesses along with his own extraordinary home in the woods near Spring Valley, OH. His last project before having to quit working because of worsening memory problems was the Tucson, AZ home and barn of his sister, Linda. All of Tom’s designs included bits from his very favorite architect/artist, Frank Lloyd Wright. In fact, he was a collector of all things Frank Lloyd Wright. He was also a collector of unique salt and pepper shakers, ceramics, and glassware. Other interests over the years included Tennis and bicycling. In their younger days before adopting Aaron, Tom and Ann traveled extensively and brought back curious mementos which were displayed in their museum-like home. Tom was an artist as well as an architect and loved photography and painting. He enjoyed decorating and taking holiday pictures. When he had to leave his beloved home and move to River Oaks Alzheimer’s Special Care Center, he was a favorite with the staff because of his ability to draw and paint and his dry sense of humor. He kept everyone going! He loved getting presents, especially Peeps of all colors and shapes, black licorice, and sweaters. We will all miss Tom greatly. He was a thoughtful guy with immense talent. RIP Tom. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 6, from 11 to 12 noon with a service at 12 o’clock at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 East Stroop Rd, Kettering.
