Barbara Joan (Leslie) Osteen, age 85, of Kettering, Ohio, formerly of Trenton, Ohio, passed away peacefully at her home on September 8, 2026, following a lengthy and courageous battle with COPD.
Joan was born in Bonny Blue, Virginia, the fifth of twelve children born to Agnes and Claude Leslie. She spent much of her early childhood in the coal camps of southwestern Virginia before her family moved to Ohio when she was about nine years old.
Joan met the love of her life, Tom Osteen, when she was nineteen. Tom and Joan’s cousin, J.L., had been working on a ranch in Florida before coming to Ohio in search of work. It was during that time that Joan and Tom met, beginning a life together that would span many years and become the center of the family they built.
Joan was a devoted homemaker whose life centered around the people she loved most. A loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, she will be remembered for her quiet and gentle spirit, her kindness, and her unwavering devotion to her family. She was a woman of few harsh words and many quiet acts of love.
Joan found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. She loved tending to her garden, spending time fishing, enjoying the comfort of her home, and relaxing with her beloved cat, Jasmine. Following the loss of her husband, Tom, six years ago, Joan missed him deeply but continued to live independently and remain active in the home and life they had shared. Her family finds comfort in knowing that, after six years apart, Tom and Joan are together once again.
She is survived by her daughter, Deb Conley; granddaughter, Lauren Stewart; siblings, Frank (Janet) Leslie, Claude (Sandy) Leslie, Carolyn (Dave) Marlin, Jim (Kathy) Leslie, and John (Debbie) Leslie; brother-in-law Bob (Louise) Osteen; sisters-in-law Bonnie Osteen and Glenda Potter; special friends Mark Anstadt and family; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved her. Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tom; her parents, Agnes and Claude Leslie; and her siblings, Dorothy, Richard, Dora, Doug, Mae, and Betty.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Road, Kettering, Ohio, with memorial services and a Celebration of Life beginning at 4:00 P.M. Burial arrangements will be made at a later date.
Joan’s life was not measured by grand gestures, but by the love, kindness, and gentleness she gave so freely to those around her. Her quiet presence will be deeply missed, and her memory will remain in the hearts of her family always. Condolences may be shared with the family through the Routsong Funeral Home website.
