GATES, Burton J., age 95, of Springboro died on Friday, January 20, 2012, at 1:50am.
Burt was born on August 30, 1916, in Columbus, OH, to Jewell and Flora Gates. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Mary Margaret Sutherland; two sisters, Marian and Janet; and a great grandson, Eric Young. Burt is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Catherine Gates "nee Manoloff Speros"; daughter, Kathy (Larry); son, Richard (Barbara); step-son, Michael (Mary); grandson, Marc (Soraya); great-granddaughter, Jade; and nieces and nephews: Susanne, Carolyn, David, Betsy, Greg, Richard, and Carol.
Burt graduated from North High School in Columbus and attended Ohio State University until called to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He left as a Major after four years but stayed in the Army Reserve program on the staff of the Dayton Army Reserve School where he retired as a Colonel. During this time, he was employed as a security consultant at Wright-Patterson AFB until his retirement.
Burt was a longtime member of the Retired Officers Association, the Beavercreek Lions Club, and a member of 40 some years of a local Bridge Group. In his later years, Burt volunteered at Yankee Trace Golf Course as a player's assistant.
He was a good family man who was loved and respected by all. Burt was a member of Southwest Church in Springboro.
The family will greet friends from 10:00-11:00am on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at ROUTSONG FUNERAL HOME, 81 N. Main St., Centerville, OH. A memorial service will be held following the visitation at 11:00am also at the funeral home. The family will also greet friends following the service until 1:00pm. Burial following at 2:00pm at Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield, OH.
