Carl Anthony Barhorst

May 13, 1938 — August 30, 2021

BARHORST, Carl A., age 83, of Kettering, OH, formerly of Ft. Loramie, OH, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2021. Carl was born on May 13, 1938 to the late Irenus and Catherine (O’Reily) Barhorst, in Ft. Loramie. Following his graduation from Ft. Loramie High School he went on to earn his Associates Degree in Chemistry from the University of Dayton (which also made him a lifelong UD fan). After his time at UD Carl began his longtime career as a Pharmacist following his subsequent education from the University of New Mexico. He met his future wife Ellie Evans in Dayton and they were married in New Mexico. Ellie and Carl are both longtime members of Ascension Catholic Church, where he was involved with the Knights of Columbus, and volunteered for many church events, including the fish fry and funeral masses. While his strong work ethic often kept him busy on weekends and even holidays, his top priority was spending time with his family, whether it was attending countless sporting events or even just enjoying each other’s company on the patio. Carl had many hobbies throughout his life, including playing cards with family and friends, and studying the family history through genealogy, but arguably his favorite pastime was traveling. Carl enjoyed traveling everywhere from Europe, to Australia, and Asia, but most special to him were the trips around the US with Ellie and his children. When Carl wasn’t working, traveling, or spending time with family, he could be found tinkering with any one of his numerous home projects. His quiet confidence was always evident when it came to supporting his friends and family, and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Carl is preceded in death by his infant son, Mark Barhorst; and siblings, Nick Barhorst and Linda Westgerdes.

He is survived by his, loving wife of 59 years, Ellie; children, Jean Garboden, Eric (Erin) Barhorst, and Matthew (Melissa) Barhorst; grandchildren, Carly, Madeline, Catherine, and Carl M. Barhorst, and Erica, Jack, and Mitchell Garboden; brother, Dave (Judy) Barhorst; and numerous extended family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff at Kettering Medical Center, Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton, and DaVita Dialysis Center, for the excellent medical care they all provided Carl. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Saturday, September 4, at Ascension Catholic Church. A visitation will be held prior at the church from 9-10am. Burial in Old St. Michael’s Cemetery in Ft. Loramie, OH following the Mass.
