Carolyn Jane Nunn

December 8, 1936 — September 23, 2023

Dayton

Carolyn Jane Nunn (86), a devoted mother and grandmother and a faithful servant of Jesus Christ, found peace on September 23 in Dayton, Ohio. Carolyn entered the world on December 8, 1936 in a farmhouse near Paris, Illinois and was the second of five children born to William and Doris Day (née Quillen).  She grew up on the farm and attended elementary school in Vermilion, Illinois, and then she attended Paris High School, graduating in 1954, then married Frank Minton in 1955. The couple moved to Potomac, Illinois and then to Oswego, Illinois, where Frank became a pastor at the Church of the Good Shepherd.  In 1958, Carolyn gave birth to her only son, Tim. A daughter, Tanya, came along in 1959, followed by another daughter, Pam, in 1962.  Carolyn always looked with special fondness upon these years as a young mother and active member of the church where her husband was pastor.  The family moved to Naperville, Illinois and then to New Concord, Ohio, where Frank became a professor at Muskingum College.  During her time in New Concord, Carolyn had a third daughter, Gretchen, in 1970.  Carolyn became a part-time student at Muskingum College, but she found her chief joy through being a mother and an active member of the United Methodist Church.  After the breakup of her marriage in 1972, Carolyn moved to Aurora, Illinois, where she raised her four children and worked as a secretary. She was fortunate to have comfort and support from the wonderful community at Bethany United Methodist Church, where she ended up being a member for more than 30 years. In 1981 Carolyn married Bill Nunn; they traveled extensively, visiting Europe, Asia, and Africa.  In 2001, Bill succumbed to prostate cancer and died on their 20th wedding anniversary.  In 2004, Carolyn retired from Cokesbury bookstore and moved to Charlotte, NC to be near her daughter Tanya and her family. There she joined Assurance United Methodist Church and commenced a life as a doting grandmother and active church member.  In 2017, the four children helped Carolyn move to 10 Wilmington Place in Dayton, Ohio, near her daughter Pam.  The nurses and staff at 10 Wilmington Place were remarkably caring and compassionate to Carolyn, and they took excellent care of her as she suffered from dementia. Carolyn did her best to show her family and her Lord the love that always flowed so easily from her heart.  Although her journey on this Earth has ended, this love lives on in all of us.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her siblings, John Day and Larry Day, and is survived by her siblings, Ruth Ann Webb (Chicago, IL) and Evelyn Davis (Midland, TX).  She is also survived by her four children, Tim Minton (Donna), of Boulder, CO; Tanya Mitchell (Gary) of Charlotte, NC; Pam Bucaro (Ted) of Dayton, OH; and Gretchen Minton (Kevin Brustuen) of Bozeman, MT. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Michelle Minton (Esten Allhands), Jill Bucaro, Christine Minton (Matthew Gunn), Joseph Bucaro (Katie Bucaro), Andrew Mitchell, Suzanne Mitchell, and Luke Minton, as well as two great-grandchildren: Salvatore Bucaro and Talia Gunn.
