Charles A. Phillips
Cap
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Charles Alan Phillips. What most people will remember about “Cap” is he was loyal, hardworking, would do anything for you and was an all-around good person. Cap was a wonderful husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and special grandpa.
Cap, age 84, formerly of Oakwood, passed away May 17, 2023.
Cap is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nancy (Overman) Phillips; his children, Beth (Steve) Guthrie, Sarah (Blake) Rigel, Eric (Ilona) Phillips; sister, Sue (Phillips) Newell and extended family, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was a wonderful grandpa to Braeden, Ainsley and Caelan Guthrie; Amelia and Eli Rigel; Avery and Ethan Phillips.
Cap was preceded in death by his parents, George and Thora (Scheffel) Phillips.
Cap went to Oakwood High School and graduated in 1957. He was a stellar athlete and was the quarterback on the football team and played basketball and baseball as well.
In 1961 he graduated from Wittenberg University, majoring in Biology. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Cap served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963 and was promoted to the rank of Specialist fifth class.
Cap worked at the Mound in Miamisburg for over 40 years. He also worked at Ace Hardware in his retirement years and was a customer favorite.
Cap was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church. He was an active member of the Young at Heart Group and volunteered to maintain one of the flower beds.
Cap enjoyed the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, camping trips with his children and gardening were some of his favorite activities. He loved the yearly fishing trips with his friends and family and in his later years enjoyed taking his grandchildren fishing for bluegills at the local pond. He was an excellent marksman and enjoyed hunting and clay shooting. Cap had a green thumb and happily donned a pair of bib overalls and got to work outside. His yard and flowerbeds were beautifully maintained. He always kept a backyard garden and grew a variety of vegetables. He and his father, George, were proprietors of a one-acre garden on his aunt’s farm. Many happy days were spent on the farm, and their garden produced an amazing bounty of vegetables that were shared with friends and family.
Cap was also a skilled woodworker and made beautiful pieces in his basement workshop that were gifted and treasured by friends and family.
Cap was an avid sports fan. He took great pride watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events.
Cap loved his family and valued spending time with his grandchildren. His grandchildren have fond memories of John Deere tractor rides, hikes to the creek, playing games, gardening and sitting on the porch watching birds.
