Markland, David L “Butch”, age 84, of Dayton, OH, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on April 7, 1942 in Dayton, OH, to the late Lemuel and Elizabeth Markland. Butch grew up in North Dayton and graduated from Fairview High School before enlisting in the U.S Army. Butch received an honorable discharge from the Army after 2 years of active and 4 years in the reserve duty. He then went to work as a “Bread Man” for Wonder Bread, where he retired after 23 years. In 1986 Butch met Carol, striking up an immediate friendship, and later marrying in 1988.
Butch was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge 73 and FOE 321 in Beavercreek, where you could often find him at Friday night karaoke, belting out “House of the Rising Sun”. He was a Diehard Cleveland Browns; Cincinnati Reds and OSU football fan.
Butch never met a stranger. He was a euchre enthusiast, a trivia genius, a decent golfer and the owner of an infectious laugh and smile that made every room brighter. His warmth, curiosity, and easy humor created instant connections with everyone he met. Butch will be missed terribly by his numerous friends, fellow golf buddies, and Moose members.
He leaves behind his wife of 37 years, Carol Markland; daughter, Theresa (Ron Myers) Markland; son, Todd Markland; grandson, Andrew (Courtney Goodman) Berger; sister, Barb Luckenbill; brother in law Bud (Kim) Holiga; sister in law, Mary Holiga; and many, many nieces and nephews.
Butch was preceded in death by his parents, Lemuel and Libby; sisters, Bette Morter and Marilyn Scoppe; brothers in law, Frank Scoppe, Herb Morter, Eddie Luckenbill, Tim Holiga and Tony Holiga.
A graveside service will be held at 2pm on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at Dayton National Cemetery, 4400 W. Third St., Dayton, OH 45428. A celebration of Butch’s wonderful life will be held from 4-8pm on June 19, 2026, at VFW Post 8312, 2389 Dayton-Xenia Rd. Beavercreek, OH 45434.
