Dorothy Jean Sickinger

March 9, 1930 — August 2, 2017

SICKINGER, Dorothy Jean, 87, of Washington Township, Ohio, formerly of Oakwood, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on August 2, 2017. Born March 9, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Margaret Ballew. An only child, she was raised on a farm in Prarie Hill, MO, a community so small that they changed the population sign every time someone was born or died. In her younger years, she loved to sing in the choir, play the piano, and especially ride her horses. She had a love of the outdoors, music and animals which she instilled in her children. After high school, while she was attending Truman State University in Kirksville, MO, she met her future husband Glen Sickinger on a blind date. They were married for 64 years. After moving to Dayton, OH she taught at Colonel White High School while starting her family. Later, she began selling residential real estate. Eventually, she bought rental properties that she owned and managed for the rest of her career. She did volunteer work for numerous organizations throughout her adult life, especially for Grandview Hospital and The Dayton Opera Guild. Over the years, she enjoyed traveling the world with her husband and close friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Glen and sons Steven and Brad. She is survived by her children Bart (Irina Desalamanca) Sickinger of Orlando, FL, Robert (Tammy) Sickinger of Dayton, OH and Lisa Sickinger of Dayton, OH; sister-in-law Donna Bruno of Milan, OH; three grandchildren, Chris, Matt and Katie, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend gratitude to Jeans caretakers of many years Kelly Blank, Dorothy Frederickson and Tracy Lewis, and her Hospice of Dayton team. A memorial service with family reception to follow will be held at 5pm Thursday, August 31, at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd, Kettering. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton.
