Edward Collins, 77, of Sugarcreek Township, Ohio, passed away from natural causes on September 11, 2023, in Fairborn, Ohio.

 

Ed was born in Columbus, Ohio, on March 21, 1946. He attended St. Catharine Elementary School and St. Charles Academy in Columbus and graduated from Chaminade High School in Dayton in 1964. He graduated from Wright State University in Fairborn, Ohio with a B.S. Degree in Systems Engineering, and spent much of his career working for the Department of Defense at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton.

 

Ed was a proud member of the team that developed the experimental X-29 fighter jet that flew at multi-sonic speeds and featured movable swept-forward wings.

 

At an early age, Ed showed a great aptitude for science and mathematics. As a young boy he spent a lot of time experimenting with his chemistry set in the family home in Columbus, Ohio.

 

In later years, he became an avid participant in amateur “ham” radio and was actively involved in the Dayton Area Amateur Radio Association. He took pride in helping to plan the annual Hamvention meeting that attracts more than 20,000 participants each year.

 

Ed was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds and the Cincinnati Bengals and the Wright State Raiders basketball team. He also looked forward to attending the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament “First Four” event each year in Dayton with a group of friends.

 

After retirement, he enjoyed pursuing family genealogy and found several significant links in the family’s history.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents Neil Collins and Jeanne B. Collins and older brother Neil Collins. He is survived by his brothers Christopher (Pamela) Collins of Stow, Ohio, and Timothy (Shannon L. Price) Collins of Bushnell, IL. In addition, he is survived by his niece Angela (Kevin) Erickson of Chelan, WA, and nephews Brian Collins, Stow, Ohio, Neil Brent Collins, Kennewick, WA, and Daniel Collins, Baltimore, MD.

 

There will be no calling hours or service. He will be interred at St. Joseph Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio.
