NACHLINGER, Harvie E., age 78, of Kettering, OH, passed away on Monday, October 12, 2026. Harvie was born on August 7, 1948, in Elgin, TX, to the late E.A "Buster" and Helen (née Allen) Nachlinger. The family lived in several locales in Texas before settling in Cameron, TX. He graduated from C H Yoe High School in 1966. Harvie continued his education at Texas A&M University where he was proud to be a member of the Corps of Cadets and a member of The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band. He graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
After spending a summer turning cantaloupes, Harvie knew there was a better way to earn money. He started his broadcast career as a disk jockey with a hometown station in Cameron, Texas. While attending Texas A&M University, Harvie helped found the first television station at A&M and was a late-night DJ for the campus radio station. After graduation,Harvie took his first job as a reporter with KIII in Corpus Christi, TX. There he covered the Naval base. Harvie had the amazing opportunity to fly with the Blue Angels, a memory he held dearly.
While in Corpus Christi, Harvie married Linda Schafer and adopted her son, Joe, who was proud to take the last name of Nachlinger. They moved to Kearney, NB. Harvie held the position as a news director and main news anchor with KHGI-TV. He didn’t adapt well to the snow and cold of Nebraska. Later, they moved to the Dayton, OH area.
His 14-year career at WDTN began as the assignment editor, then assistant news director and finally, managing editor. While at WDTN Harvie created the first television web page in the state of Ohio. In 1983 Harvie won an Emmy for writing “The High Price of Getting Old.”
In 1988, Harvie met Suzy Herzog. They married in 1992. Harvie easily filled the role of “The Harvman” and dad, as her son Alex Gaston called him. Harvie moved to a news director position at KREX in Grand Junction, CO, next. Then he moved to the Diversified broadcasting station, WCJB in Gainesville, FL.
Diversified Broadcasting promoted Harvie to station manager of WPDE in Myrtle Beach, SC. The control studio was in Florence, SC, 67 miles away. Harvie managed the move of the control studio to a location in Conway, SC. The total off-air time was 24 minutes.
At the age of 55 Harvie decided it was time for him to leave the daily news business. For his next career path, he wanted to help the next generation of broadcasters grow. Harvie believed becoming a teacher/professor at the college level would fulfill that desire. Despite having over 35 years of experience, he needed to get a master’s degree to accomplish it. The University of South Carolina offered him a teaching fellowship. Harvie received a Master of Arts Degree in 2006 and was awarded The Kapp Tau Alpha Top Scholar Award. Harvie designed, ordered every piece of equipment and oversaw the construction of the Broadcast Journalism Television Studio and Control when the Mass Communications department was relocated from the basement of The Carolina Coliseum to the former School of Public Health building. A State Department Grant sent Harvie to the country of Estonia to train their staff at a new television station in Narva. Harvie was also the main commencement announcer at USC. Associate Professor Nachlinger taught at the University of South Carolina until his retirement in 2020.
Harvie enjoyed traveling. One of his favorite vacations with Suzy and grandson Tobi, was to Alaska. A great two and half weeks of land excursions, riding on the Wilderness Express, visiting Jeff King’s Husky Homestead in Denali, cruising and seeing whales and an island of bald eagles, plus sightseeing the city of Seattle. Winter Caribbean cruises were always enjoyed and earlier this year Harvie found a slot machine that liked him and he won big. Other favorite excursions were The America’s Cup Sailing Ship Regattas in St. Maarten's. In 2024, Harvie and Suzy sailed from Southampton, London to the Baltics. They spent a day with the group he trained in Estonia. It was a dream come to fruition. He also enjoyed the high school graduation cruises of Tobi and Addi.
Harvie was a man who would always lend a hand. He could fix anything electronic, mechanical, or computer related. His Trivial Pursuit skills were well known as well as his enjoyment of the card game Euchre. Saturdays, during football season, would find him cheering on his Aggies. Harvie enjoyed his time on the golf course, and although not a sportsman loved a good challenge.
Harvie is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Suzy (Susan Beth) Herzog; sons, Joseph (Sharma) Nachlinger and Alex Gaston; grandchildren, Addi Nachlinger, Tobi Gaston, Kylie Snead (Justin Crawl), Mackenzie McDougal; and great grandson Slater Crawl; brother, James (Kathrine) Nachlinger; nieces and nephews, Kristen (Brandon) Pillans, Justin (Denna) Nachlinger, Kaitlyn (Anthony) Battles, Lauren (Aaron) Carr, and Stephanie (Johann) Hintz; great-nieces and nephews, Nikolas and Parker Pillans, Tavin Nachlinger, Riane and Cameron Battles, Maddison Carr, Brett and Ben Hintz.
