James T. Ambrose, a highly respected attorney and lifelong public servant in Dayton, Ohio, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on May 27, 1948, Jim was the son of Anne (Neroni) Ambrose and John Ambrose. He grew up surrounded by a large extended family many beloved aunts, uncles, and close cousins who played an important role in his life and helped shape the person he became.
For more than 50 years, Jim practiced as a trial lawyer, earning a reputation for integrity, sharp legal insight, and unwavering dedication to his clients. Early in his career, he played an instrumental role in helping establish Ohio’s Pretrial Release Program in 1973, a reform that modernized court operations and continues to benefit communities across the state.
Beyond the courtroom, Jim was deeply engaged in civic life. He served on the Board of Education for Kettering Schools, where he worked to improve educational opportunities for families in the community. He also served as a magistrate for the Kettering Courts, where he was known for fairness, level headed judgment, and compassion. Jim was one of the founding members and the first president of the South Dayton Knights youth football league.
Jim had a great sense of humor, quick wit, and a natural ability to put people at ease. He was also a gifted storyteller, whether recounting moments from the courtroom, sharing memories from his youth, or spinning a tale simply to make someone laugh. He had a way of holding an audience and brightening any room he entered. His presence will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
Jim is survived by his sister, Phyllis (James) Montali, and by his brother, Robert (Terri) Ambrose
Jim’s greatest joy was being a father of Christopher W. Ambrose (Emilee), and Douglas J. Ambrose (Valerie), he was very involved in coaching their football teams, encouraging their interests, and supporting them through every phase of life. Jim adored his grandchildren and took immense pride in each of them, Annabel Ambrose, Nicholas Ambrose, Mason Ambrose, Michael Ambrose, and Ellie Ambrose.
He leaves behind a legacy of service, generosity, love, and a life lived with purpose, conviction, and heart. His impact on his family, his community, and the legal profession will endure for many years to come.
