John Martin Henry, Sr.

June 11, 1935 — March 14, 2021

HENRY, John "Jack" Martin Sr, age 85, of Kettering, passed away quietly at home Sunday, March 14, 2021. Jack was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1935 to Lester and Elizabeth "Betty" (Schierloh) Henry. He graduated from Fairmont High School in 1953, Sinclair College, and received his Bachelor's in Accounting from Wright State University in 1977. He was a founding member of the Stag 7, and served as President of LTS Fraternity at Sinclair. He worked for NCR as an international accountant, retiring in 1994. After retirement he served on the NCR Credit Union Board of Directors for many years. Jack served in the Navy Reserve as a Hospital Corpsman, and later joined the American Legion. He was a Star Scout (BSA) and subsequently served as Assistant Scoutmaster. He was also a loyal blood donor, earning multiple pins for reaching donation goals.

Jack met his wife, Phyllis, in 8th grade, and they married in 1955, having been married for 61 years at the time of her death in 2016. Together they raised a close family and created a lifetime of memories. He was very proud that he and Phyl had visited all 50 states. They spent decades traveling to libraries, cemeteries, and home sites with family members pursuing family history, and was honored to be included in the First Families of Ohio membership. He had a wide variety of interests, including camping, softball, the Reds, trains, music, traveling, history, gardening, reading, aliens, and eating. His greatest pride was his children and grandchildren. He never missed a recital, school awards ceremony or performance and became the resident videographer. Jack never knew a stranger, and seemed to meet someone he knew everywhere he went. He was a favorite of the multitude of children in Phyl's care over the years and earned the title of official chauffer.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife, Phyllis (Rensch), and sister, Jean Secrist. He is survived by daughter, Jeannette (Tim) Myers; sons, John (Lenette) Henry, Jr, Jeffrey (Debbie) Henry, 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; as well as cousins, nephews and nieces; also surviving is friend and recent wife, Ellen.
