WYATT, SSG Joseph Russell, age 53, of Troy, OH, formerly of Kettering, OH passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 3, 2025. He was born on September 24, 1971 to Joe A. and Betty (Hanes), in Dayton, OH. Joe grew up in Xenia and attended Beavercreek High School before enlisting in the US Army. He had a long career with the Army and was proud to serve his country for over 30 years. A devoted member of the 342nd Military Police Company, Joe served with honor during three deployments, including tours in Guantanamo Bay, Fort Riley, and various locations in Iraq. After retiring from the Army Reserve in 2023, his service didn’t end—he continued to support his unit in a civilian role with the Department of Defense as their administrator, a position he held for nearly two decades.
In his retirement, Joe and his family settled in Troy, where he found joy in simple pleasures camping under the stars, sharing music, and storytelling around the fire with close friends. He found comfort and connection through music, which was nearly always playing in the background of his life. Above all, Joe was happiest while spending time with his beloved family, especially his five grandchildren. He had the gift of turning any gathering into a celebration. Joe’s kind heart, generous spirit, and sense of adventure will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Joe is preceded in death by his grandfather and grandmother, J.R. and Jeanette Wyatt; and step-father, James Hanes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Caryl Wyatt; children, Alexander Wyatt, Zachary Wyatt, and Victoria (David) Theiss; grandchildren, Audra Wyatt, Aubree Theiss, Everett Theiss, Myrah Theiss, and Vivian Theiss; parents, Joe A. (Judy) Wyatt and Betty Hanes; siblings, Erik Wyatt and Amy Wyatt; and numerous extended family and friends.
