Larry L. Sayers

Larry L Sayers, age 81, of Centerville, Ohio went home to the Lord surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, November 16, 2022. Larry was born on September 4, 1941; the son of the late Orville R. and Pauline (Lothian) Sayers in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Susan Widmer. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carolyn (Roehr) Sayers; children, Cynthia (Mark) Sayers Peiser of New Canaan, Connecticut, Christine Lynn (James) Yokajty of Centerville, Ohio; grandchildren, Andrew James (Emily) Yokajty, Daniel Paul Yokajty, Joseph William Peiser, John Mark Peiser, and Matthew Robert Peiser; great grandchildren, Jane Eleanor Yokajty and Juliana Lynn Yokajty; and numerous extended family members and friends.

Larry was raised on his family farm in Blairstown, Iowa and graduated from Blairstown high school. He was married to Carolyn R. Roehr on June 3, 1962. He graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. and was commissioned as a U.S. Army officer in 1963. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and received two bronze stars as well as other honors. While in the Army, he received a M.S. from Florida Institute of Technology. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1984 and worked at McDonnell Douglas as a contract project manager in St. Louis, Missouri until 2008. While in Lake St. Louis, he was very active in his church, serving on the finance committee, singing in the choir, and volunteering at the food bank. During retirement, Larry and Carolyn enjoyed traveling, especially cruising, and visits to Hawaii. Since moving to Centerville, he has enjoyed his neighborhood, social events, and the Mac computer group. What Larry enjoyed most was spending time with his loving family, especially his grandsons. Larry was especially proud of his five grandsons who all achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

A visitation for family and friends will be Monday, November 21, 2022 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Road, Kettering, OH 45429. A graveside service will be Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at Dayton National Cemetery, 4400 W 3rd St, Dayton, OH 45417, at 10:00AM where Army Military Honors will be rendered. A Celebration of Life will follow at 12:00PM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 4865 Wilmington Pike, Kettering, OH 45440. Family and friends may visit at the church from 11:00AM until the time of service.
