HOFFMAN, LTC Lawrence W. (USA ret), age 80, of Kettering, OH passed away on March 22, 2026, with his wife of 58 years by his side. Larry was born on April 18, 1945 in Massilon, OH, to the late Donferd and Alice (Helline) Hoffman. He graduated from Canton Central Catholic High School in 1963, before continuing his education at the University of Dayton. While attending UD he met the love of his life Sue Stephan, and was a member and officer in the National Society of the Scabbard and Blade. He graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics in 1967. Upon his graduation he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps of the United States Army. While on active-duty Larry earned his MS in Operations Research/Systems Analysis from The Ohio State University, in 1976, where he was inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon, an honorary engineering society.
Larry was on active duty from 1968 through 1978 and served with the 2nd Infantry (Indian Head) Division in the Republic of Korea and the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. He retired from the United States Army Reserves in 1993, as a Lieutenant Colonel. Among the many medals and citations he received during his 25-year military career were the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Korea Defense Service Medal. Larry was a life member of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA).
After his military service Larry worked for Ford Motor Co. in Michigan, before returning to Dayton to work at ADP, followed by CACI Inc. He retired as a Principal Research Scientist in 2005, from Battelle Memorial Institute. Larry was especially proud to be listed in Who’s Who in the Midwest. In his retirement he took an interest in supporting the University of Dayton, and was a member of the John Stuart Society, the Leo Meyer Society, Front Porch Society, and the 1850 Club. Larry’s humorous and loving spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Larry is survived by his College Sweetheart, Sue Ellen Hoffman.
A visitation will be held from 4-6pm on Monday, March 30, 2026 at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Road, Kettering, OH 45429. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11am the following day, Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 4500 Ackerman Blvd. Kettering, OH 45429, with Fr. Dan Meyer officiating. Internment will be in the Dayton National Cemetery, with military honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Army Emergency Relief (AER).
