JOHNS, Mary (Brown), age 83 of Towson, MD passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2023.  Mary was born in Baltimore, MD in 1939 to Howard and Katherine Brown.  She was a graduate of Patterson High School in Baltimore and received her BS in Nursing from Lutheran Hospital in Baltimore.  She later received a BS in Psychology from Johns Hopkins University.

After college, Mary caught the traveling bug.  She spent a fabulous summer and fall traveling in an old Volkswagen to places like England, Germany, France, Italy and then Iran and Kuwait.  She then returned home to Baltimore and worked as a nurse at the University of Maryland in the operating room.  Later, she became the head nurse in the neurosurgery unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

She married Richard Johns in 1968 and enjoyed an active social calendar in Baltimore and Ocean City, MD.  She and Richard traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad.  Some of her favorite trips were exploring in Brazil, China, and Tahiti.

Mary loved her dogs, white Bichon Frise’s – Freddy I, Freddy II, Freddy III and Pipa.  She collected interesting, rare gem stones and made them into beautiful jewelry.  Mary was also a collector of depression glass and became the president of the local glass club in Baltimore.  She later got her degree in psychology and began a long career in research at the University of Maryland transplant program where she eventually became the head transplant coordinator.

After her retirement, Mary enjoyed weekends in Ocean City and visiting relatives, reading, shopping and playing mahjong with her friends and of course traveling whenever and wherever she could.  Her nieces and nephews fondly remember trips with her to Anguilla, New York City, and Ocean Isle Beach, NC.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Katherine Brown and her husband, Richard Johns.  She is survived by her brothers, Harry Brown, MD and George Brown, MD; her nephews, Chris Brown, Nathaniel Brown, Oliver Brown, and Peter Brown and her nieces, Patty Ann Lea, Rebecca Newman, and Rachel Brown.

A memorial service will be held for Mary by her family in Dayton at a later date in 2023.  She will be buried next to her parents and husband in Baltimore, MD. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be made at www.routsong.com.
