Mary Lee Struckman Davenport, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and lifelong champion of reading passed away peacefully surrounded by family. She was a bright light to all who knew her—radiant in spirit and often wearing her favorite color, yellow, which matched the warmth she brought into every room.
Mary Lee shared a remarkable love story with her husband, Ken Davenport. Their journey began in 1963 when they met by chance at a bus stop in Dayton. That moment blossomed into a lifelong partnership rooted in love and laughter. They were married in May of 1965 and built a beautiful life together, raising two children, David (Danielle) and Amy. Mary Lee was a proud and loving grandmother to Ella and Jack, whose lives she enriched with her endless support and boundless love. Her heart truly belonged to her grandchildren, whose every milestone and moment she celebrated with pride. She was their biggest fan—whether cheering from the sideline, dying Easter eggs or simply listening with love.
Her love of books and learning defined much of her life. She served as a dedicated librarian at Saville Elementary School for almost 20 years, where she inspired generations of students to discover the joy of reading. Even after her retirement, she continued to volunteer in elementary schools for many years, always ready to share a story, a smile, or a word of encouragement.
One of Mary Lee’s gifts included cheering people on. She celebrated the successes of others, offered steady support through challenges, and was always in someone’s corner with a kind word or thoughtful gesture. She was a wonderful listener—present, patient, and full of wisdom. She also served as the keeper of the family heritage, remembering and sharing stories that held the family’s history together with heart and humor. Her self-deprecating sense of humor kept everyone laughing, and she never took herself too seriously.
She especially loved the beach. She found peace in watching the waves and joy in being near the ocean. She enjoyed quiet afternoons working on puzzles, delighting in the challenge and satisfaction they brought. Known for her playful spirit, she could be delightfully competitive and never turned down a lively game of Uno.
Additionally, Mary Lee was a devoted member of Grace United Methodist Church, where she participated in many church activities and faithfully supported the church community. Her faith was a guiding force in her life, and her involvement reflected her deep commitment to service, fellowship, and love.
Mary Lee was preceded in death by her husband, Ken Davenport; her parents, C. Lee and Mary Struckman; and her brother, Tom Struckman. She is survived by her family: T.C., Amber, Eleanor, and Tev Struckman, as well as her cousin, Karen Horsley.
The family would like to thank St. Leonard’s Assisted Living SDR unit for their extraordinary care of Mary Lee, as well as Ken.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 5, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering, Ohio.
